On Saturday we make a day trip with all the guests (6 Germans, 2 Swiss, which we call the Italians because they speak Italian and behave like noisy Italians and us) to Sangalaki. We have 5 years ago for a week Sangalaki sat, and so today we're going back. We deal with a large vessel that the speedboat, we normally use for diving, dragging behind him. The big boat is considerably slower than the speedboat. We do almost 2 hours on the trip to Sangalaki, while the island after 20 minutes by boat from Maratua can already see it. We have great memories of what we Sangalaki 1 dive even 28 mantas have counted. And the Manta's (or rather the probability of Manta) are today the reason that we are all together one day to go.
After 2 hours of sailing we draw our stuff and the speedboat brings us to the first dive sites: Manta Cleaning Station. 5 years ago this was the place where we dive during 1 to 28 mantas counted. Unfortunately we are back now but the Manta's not .... We drive an hour along with the flow but do not see mantas, fortunately many other fish and turtles. When we emerge, it is fortunately stopped raining .... During the dive we could hear the rain falling on the water. After the first dive we have a surface interval of one hour and drink water and eat sweet Indonesian biscuits.
Also in the second dive, in a place called Manta Run, we have no luck. Again no mantas, turtles are back and many small and colorful fish. We float back to enjoy the flow and see the sandy bottom with different coral formations among us pass.
We have lunch on the boat. The kitchen staff has morning and made a lunch on the boat-crew passed. Yet what clever every time they managed to make fried rice, chicken drumsticks, prawn crackers, boiled eggs and melon. It has been sweltering hot and everyone is looking for shelter in the shade inside the boat. We choose the poop where we have a half hour, like real Indonesians do, sitting asleep. We are awakened by the crew that it is time for the third dive. We do this dive at the dive site, Manta Parade, and again the high expectations of many, but we believe there is frankly no longer in that today we will see Manta rays. And unfortunately, we get right. But despite the absence of any trace of the mantas is an excellent dive, with a large Eagle Ray has hidden under a table coral, octopus, turtles, batfish, 2 leaf scorpionfish patiently posing for the photo and video cameras, and many other small stuff.
Immediately after the third dive we sail back to Maratua. We sit on the roof of the boat for around 16.30 hours the sun begins to sink all nice and the temperature stable. We see the sunset from the roof of the boat and Sangalaki on the horizon disappear. Our boat German contemporaries are convinced that the full moon, about 2 days, the mantas will be there and ask for a day trip to Sangalaki about 2 days. We know not whether we go along, but on the other hand, it will still not happen that they see mantas and we are not .....
PS The translation of the title of this short report is "No mantas". Tidak means "no" or "no" and a plural in Indonesian is just 2 times the singular ![]()
